Abstract

The development of toll roads in Indonesia has increased rapidly, especially since 2015. The increase in vehicle volume has also led to an increase in the number of accidents along toll roads, especially among drivers traveling long distances. One of the main factors is fatigue caused by monotony along toll roads. This review is an initial discussion of the potential for landscape design interventions to address monotonous visual conditions on toll roads, thereby increasing driver awareness and safety. This study has considered various landscape design parameters, ranging from the macro characteristics of a landscape to micro elements of strategic planting consisting of choice of vegetation, planting patterns, planting thresholds, and color elements in plants. From these various parameters, a priority flow for implementation and potential for further development has been produced, both in research, policy, and direct application in toll road open spaces.
